A trip I took round Banksy’s Dismaland, a pop-up ‘bemusement park’ in Weston-Super-Mare that was billed as ‘The UK’s most disappointing new visitor attraction!’ in August last year.
This was a bittersweet experience in many ways as family trips to the seaside when a kid would invariably be to Weston-Super-Mare which was then still fairly bustling.
The abandoned lido (outdoor swimming pool) on the beach in which Dismaland took place was once a great place for families and famous for its pineapple-shaped slide:
Since closing down, Tropicana has decayed along with the rest of Weston-Super-Mare, a town now more famous for its high rate of drug addiction, single mothers and unemployment than for being a once-genteel seaside town with its grand Victorian pier.
As I have been asked to provide some stills (each image is rather brief in the video to keep it under that 3:30 waiting for a bus / having a shit length), I am posting some of them here. Theyare by various artists as well as Banksy and the model police state is the creation of Jimmy Cautey, one-time member of the legendary KLF who released perhaps the finest chill-out album to be produced, way back in 1989:
