So, the entity passing itself off as Pink Floyd has finally revealed details about their soon-to-be-released collection of hotly-anticipated backing tracks with overdubs that were considered too poor even for the Division Bell.
Since Roger Waters left the band in 1985, they’ve had a few problems on the lyrics front – i.e. they have nothing much to say, eventually having to rope in Dave’s wife to contribute such tasty morsels as
Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
Even if the above carried any particular meaning (and I’m fairly sure it doesn’t), anybody who uses the word ‘myriad’ should be shot on sight. Likewise ‘plethora’.
Twenty years on from the above word soup and clearly inspiration still hasn’t struck.
According to Pitchfork, it’s mostly instrumental with Polly Sampson doing the words and that for a track that’s actually called ‘Louder than Words’. Which is ironic, really.
Let’s take a closer look at that track listing, and try to deconstruct the titles a little:
01 Things Left Unsaid (we have nothing left to say)
02 It’s What We Do (it’s what we did 20 years ago and it wasn’t much cop then to be honest, but we’ve done even less since, so fuck it)
03 Ebb And Flow (mainly ebb)
04 Sum (umm..)
05 Skins (…maybe a quick joint will help with getting some ideas and that…)
06 Unsung (…nope. still got nothing)
07 Anisina (asinine)
08 The Lost Art of Conversation (nope, still nothing)
09 On Noodle Street (perhaps the worst Pink FLoyd song title since Nick’s Boogie on the little-known Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London)
10 Night Light (step away from the rhyming dictionary with your hands where I can see them)
11 Allons-y (1) (will this do?)
13 Allons-y (2) (fuck it, yes it will do)
14 Talkin’ Hawkin’ (got myself a cryin walkin sleepin talkin Stephen Hawkin.. o wait.. scratch that bit about walkin… where’s that rhyming dictionary again?)
15 Calling (various people in the industry in a desperate attempt to pick their brains for ideas. Shame Douglas Adams is dead. That Division Bell title was well worth fifty quid. Probably.)
16 Eyes To Pearls
17 Surfacing (floundering)
18 Louder Than Words (which are bound to be both profound and meaningful, right, Polly?)
